Turkey Holiday Tips: Money, Plugs, Tipping and More

14 October 2026

Money

Turkiye uses the Turkish lira. Cards work in hotels, restaurants and shops in resorts, but local cash helps in markets and small shops. Many places will give a price in pounds or euros, so compare it with the lira price.

Plugs and power

Sockets are the two-pin European type at 230 volts, so bring a UK to EU adapter. Hotels sometimes have a limited number of sockets, so a small extension lead is handy.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated in restaurants and for services, usually around ten percent when service is not included. Hotel staff are happy to receive small tips at the end of a stay.

Sun and sea

The sun is strong from May to September. Bring a high-factor sun cream, a hat and a reusable water bottle. Beach shoes can help on pebbly shores.

Before you travel

Check the FCDO travel advice for Turkiye, make sure your passport meets the entry requirements and arrange travel insurance. Keep copies of your booking confirmation.
